2020 Joseph I. Waring, Jr. Lecture In-Person

The 2020 Waring Lecture will be held Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 5:30pm in MUSC's Drug Discovery Building Auditorium at 70 President Street, and a reception will follow. This year's speaker will be Dr. Bernard Powers, Jr., presenting his talk, "From Black Bodies to the Black Body Politic: Black Carolinians, Health, Healers and History." Dr. Powers will discuss the nature and complicated history of health and healthcare for African Americans in South Carolina.

The Waring Lecture is named in memory of Dr. Joseph I. Waring, a local pediatrician and medical historian, who became the first director of the medical history collections of the University. This lecture takes place annually in the Spring semester.
