Toward a History of Healthcare: Repositioning the History of Nursing and Medicine | September SHC Noon Lecture Online
Discover the captivating history of nursing intertwined with medicine in this thought-provoking lecture by Dr. Patricia D’Antonio. Join us as she explores her compelling argument that modern nursing and medicine have developed hand-in-hand, with women seeking medical knowledge and physicians seeking knowledgeable women. By delving into existing literature on nursing history, this lecture introduces a groundbreaking approach to studying these fields together, rather than in isolation. While nursing has focused on community impact, medicine has emphasized depersonalized knowledge and expertise. Yet, these complementary disciplines have relied on each other to claim authority and achieve scientific milestones. Prepare to learn of the complex yet enlightening narratives of healthcare history, exploring notions of “success” and “failure” along the way. This event promises to challenge your perspectives and leave you with a fresh understanding of the intertwined paths of nursing and medicine.
Patricia D’Antonio, PhD, RN, FAAN, is currently the Carol E. Ware Endowed Professor in Mental Health Nursing, the Director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, and a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
