Medical Milestones: “All Are Gladly Received” | Pop-Up Exhibit

“I have found that when a person is sick or in need, it does not make any difference to them who you are or what. If you have come to help them, all are gladly received.”

Anna DeCosta Banks, Superintendent of Nurses at the Hospital and Training School for Nurses

In honor of Black History Month, you are invited to this month’s pop-up exhibit, “All A Gladly Received”: McClennan-Banks Memorial Hospital. During the era of segregation in Charleston, South Carolina, the Black community came together to establish a much needed Hospital and Training School for Nurses. At the time, white hospitals either excluded or segregated Black patients and barred Black physicians from admitting and attending to their patients. Learn more about the institution that provided care regardless of race and eventually became the McClennan-Banks Memorial Hospital at this month’s pop-up exhibit. We will also have free treats and merch for visitors!
