Medical Milestones: “Cursed Often. Blessed Often.” | Pop-Up Exhibit

“Cursed often. Blessed often. A joy to see patients so well, as to go home.”

In honor of Women’s History Month, you are invited to this month’s pop-up exhibit, “Cursed Often. Blessed Often.”: The First Licensed Female Physician in South Carolina. After being denied entry to the Medical College of the State of South Carolina because of her gender, Sarah Campbell Allen attended the Woman’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary. In October 1894, Dr. Allan took the newly instituted examinations for medical licensing in South Carolina. In her group of candidates, she was the only female present and she handily outperformed her male counterparts. She was issued license number 40, the first woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. Learn more about Dr. Allen and view her collection at this month’s pop-up exhibit. We will also have free treats and merch for visitors!
