Francis Peyre Porcher was a prominent Charlestonian doctor who was hugely significant to the history of the health sciences in Charleston. Porcher graduated from the South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) in 1844 and from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1847. During his long affiliation with the Medical College of the South Carolina, Porcher served as professor of clinical medicine and chair of materia medica, which position he held from 1874 to 1891. During the Civil War, Porcher served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army in Virginia and was detailed by C.S.A Surgeon General Samuel Preston Moore to write, Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests, a handbook to southeastern flora and fauna which could be used as substitute for blockaded pharmaceuticals. Learn more about his life and legacy this month!

About Dr. Amy Welling Gregg: She completed her Ph.D. in Comparative Studies in 2017. As a proud Ohio State University alumna, it is her pleasure to be part of such a distinguished teaching community within the College of Pharmacy. Her current book project is Nineteenth-Century American Medicine: The Implications of Professionalism, Capitalism, and Implicit Bias. It traces the emergence of American medicine and pharmacy as institutions. Interwoven within the story is the career of Dr. Francis Peyre Porcher.
