Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina - Dr. Jerry Reves graduated from Vanderbilt University, earned his MD at MUSC, and did his specialized training in anesthesiology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).
After completing residency, Dr. Reves became a pioneer in the newly developing field of cardiac anesthesia. He first practiced cardiac anesthesia in the United States Navy at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and returned to UAB then created a cardiac anesthesia division at the Duke University where he was the founding director of the Duke Heart Center and later served as chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke. He returned to Charleston in 2001 as the Dean of the College of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, positions he held until 2010.
Dr. Reves has served as president of several medical associations and editor for several scientific journals. He is the author and editor of 16 textbooks and hundreds of research publications. Most recently, Dr. Reves published South Carolina’s Indomitable College of Medicine, a book that outlines the rich history of MUSC, as the first medical school in the South.
In addition to his remarkable personal achievements, Dr. Reves has had a profound impact as a mentor. Ten of his mentees have gone on to become chairs of anesthesia departments, and five have become deans or vice presidents of other medical schools. After leaving the deanship Dr. Reves founded the MUSC Arboretum and chairs its advisory board – transforming our campus. He and his wife completed America’s Great Loop cruise of 7,000 miles around eastern North America on their 41’ trawler, Sweetgrass, 2011-2012.
