Join us for a special Student History Club lecture with historian and scholar Dr. Jennifer Dixon-McKnight. She will discuss her new book, We Paved the Way: Black Women and the Charleston Hospital Workers’ Campaign. This book highlights the leadership of Black women in the 1969 Charleston Hospital Strike, a pivotal moment in the struggle for civil rights and labor rights, which was centered here on the MUSC campus. Dr. Dixon-McKnight will share the stories that inspired her research, what this movement reveals about Black women’s activism, and why its lessons still matter today.
Dr. O. Jennifer Dixon-McKnight is an Associate Professor of History and African American Studies and serves as Program Coordinator for the African American Studies Minor. She is also the director of Project 2020: A Collaborative Oral History, which is an oral history project that explores various aspects of the pivotal year 2020 and its impact on American society. Dr. Dixon-McKnight teaches courses in African American History, African American Studies, and United States History.
Following the presentation, there will be Q&A and, as time permits, a book signing. You can purchase a copy of Dr. Dixon-McKnight’s book at local book sellers on Amazon.
