Nurse-midwife Maude Callen died in 1990, but her life's work continues to offer powerful lessons for today's medical practitioners. During her long career, Callen witnessed—and helped usher in—dramatic changes in maternal and infant healthcare as public health initiatives transformed childbirth and significantly reduced maternal and infant mortality.
