Waring Historical Library Presents October 2020 SHC Meeting Featuring Dr. Cara Delay In-Person
The October 2020 Student History Club (SHC) Meeting, sponsored by the Waring Historical Library, will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 12PM virtually on WebEx. Dr. Cara Delay, will present, "Abortion and Women’s Health Networks in Twentieth-Century South Carolina."
Through a discussion of criminal court cases, newspaper accounts, and oral histories, this presentation will analyze women’s experiences of illegal abortion in South Carolina before 1973. It sheds light on women’s health networks, particularly in African-American communities, that persisted well into the twentieth century and demonstrates the ubiquity of abortion even during criminality.
Cara Delay is a historian with degrees from Boston College and Brandeis University. Her research analyzes women, gender, and culture in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Ireland, Britain, and the Atlantic World, with a particular focus on the history of reproduction, pregnancy, and childbirth. At the College of Charleston, she teaches courses on women’s history and the history of birth and bodies.
Seating is limited and registration is required by Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 12PM to reserve your seat and receive log in information. This event is open to the public.
