Join us for the first installment of the Waring Library Society Lecture Series!

The Warren A. Sawyer Lecture, will be held Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at 6 PM, virtually on Zoom. Dr. Jonathan Jones from the Virginia Military Institute will present, "The U.S. Civil War and America’s First Opioid Crisis."   

Dr. Jonathan S. Jones is an assistant professor in the Department of History at Virginia Military Institute, where he teaches courses on the Civil War era and American medical history. He is currently completing his first book manuscript, on opioid addiction and Civil War veterans, titled “Opium Slavery: The Civil War, Veterans, and America’s First Opioid Crisis.” Jones’s research has appeared in The Journal of the Civil War Era, the Washington Post, Vice, C-SPAN, and other outlets. Jones received his PhD from Binghamton University in 2020, and before coming to VMI he was the inaugural Civil War Era Postdoctoral Scholar at Penn State’s George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center.”

The Warren A. Sawyer Lecture is named in memory of Warren Sawyer who served as Director of Libraries at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1968 until his death in November 1989. Mr. Sawyer was a long-time member of the Waring Library Society of which he served as president.

This Sawyer Lecture is the first installment for the year of our The Waring Society Lecture Series, which provides a look at new, fresh, and innovative research and publications on the history of the health sciences. Each lecture is presented in a hybrid format, part formal recorded presentation and part live discussion online with the author-historian. Those who wish to attend will need to register so that you can receive the necessary link to join the presentation, as well as a more detailed description of the logistics.
